7 1/2 hours on the plane and we arrived NY! We gave the address to the cab driver which had no clue about where it was, and didn't know any of the streets we gave him as directions. I think he didn't even understand our English. Oh well. On our way there we got quite some sightseeing. The most exotic part was to drive through a neighborhood filled with orthodox Jews. All the men had hats, coats and a pair of long curls next to their face. All the girls had skirts, shirts or dresses and bows in their hair. It really looked like something of an 1920s movie.
Then the neighborhood really changed. It got toughened up alright. And I felt like the whitest girl alive, being super un-cool and square. We were supposed to stay with a friend of mine, but she wasn't home at the moment, so a girl called Wei (pronounced Way) let us in. She was super nice and walked us to the supermarket. On the way there and back I really felt like being in an episode of "the wire", though not as tough. Still.

Random conversation on the street: Last time I got out of prison they made me do an HIV test.
Definitely different from Norway. Then, when we got back, Wei told us that the building across the street is a project building. OK - so not as far from the Wire as I thought.
